A French Chateau Inspired Outdoor Space Overlooking The Blue Ridge Mountains

This Arden, North Carolina estate sits above Walnut Cove with wide views toward the golf course and Blue Ridge Mountains beyond. The home already carried a strong French Chateau character, so we designed the landscape to feel consistent with the architecture and surrounding terrain.

We built the entire experience around the natural grade of the property and the movement of water through the site.

At the entry, we designed a custom gate using the same architectural language and materials found throughout the home. From there, a stream runs alongside the driveway and carries water downhill toward the auto court below.

Inside the court, we centered the space around a sculptural fountain and layered the surrounding landscape with clipped hedges, native stone, and structured planting. Curved paving patterns soften the scale of the hardscape while keeping the arrival sequence formal and refined.

Behind the home, the terrain drops sharply toward the course. Instead of flattening the hillside, we terraced the backyard into multiple outdoor living spaces that step naturally down the property.

We positioned the pool and elevated spa directly off the covered veranda to keep the main entertaining spaces connected to the home. Lower terraces include built-in lounge areas, fire features, covered pergolas, and an outdoor kitchen, all oriented toward the mountain views below.

We also carried the water feature from the front entry into the backyard so the same movement and sound continue throughout the property. Water passes beneath the veranda before spilling into lower basins integrated into the terrace structure below.

At the lowest level of the yard, we designed a putting green just above one of Walnut Cove’s greens. Native boulders and layered mountain planting help tie the feature back into the surrounding landscape.

Throughout the property, we selected native and regionally appropriate planting to keep the estate grounded in the mountainside setting surrounding it.

Challenges

The steep grade across the property required careful elevation planning from the front entry through the backyard terraces. We used retaining structures, layered outdoor spaces, and integrated water features to create functionality throughout the yard while preserving the views of the Walnut Cove course and the mountains beyond.
