Located within Historic Fremont Place, this Los Angeles property has the kind of architectural presence that deserved an equally considered outdoor experience. The existing backyard felt dated compared to the modern, refined interiors, so the goal was to bring that same level of detail outside while respecting the character of the home and neighborhood.
The homeowners wanted to completely rethink how they could use the property. An updated outdoor kitchen and multiple gathering areas create more opportunities to cook, host, and spend time outside, while a dedicated recreation area gives the yard another purpose beyond entertaining.
A pickleball court became one of the defining features of the project. The homeowners initially considered a tennis court, but pickleball offered a better fit for both the property and the way they wanted to use it. Our team reworked that side of the yard to accommodate the new court while preserving room for landscaping, circulation, and the surrounding outdoor living areas.
Throughout the yard, we focused on clean lines, high-end materials, and a restrained planting palette that feels current without competing with the historic setting. The result is a contemporary backyard that feels connected to the home, supports several different ways of spending time outside, and brings a more modern lifestyle to one of Los Angeles’ most established neighborhoods.

Because the home is in a historic location, the project required careful consideration of the property’s architectural context. The backyard allowed more flexibility than the front of the home, but the materials and planting still needed to feel appropriate for the neighborhood.
The homeowners also wanted several distinct experiences within the existing backyard, including recreation, cooking, dining, and lounging. When they chose a pickleball court instead of the originally planned tennis court, our team reconsidered the entire left side of the property. The challenge was fitting the court comfortably into the yard without allowing it to overpower the landscape or disconnect the surrounding gathering spaces.
