A Compact Los Angeles Yard That Feels So Spacious

The goal for this yard wasn’t to fit more features into it. The goal was to get more out of the space our clients did have.

It’s a small lot, but the finished design feels open, comfortable, and easy to move through. The homeowners wanted to be able to gather around a fire, cook outdoors, and spend more time outside together.

So, we focused on a handful of experiences that would have the biggest impact on how they use the space every day. We added built-in seating to eliminate the need for additional furniture and keep the layout feeling open. The fire lounge gives everyone a natural place to gather, while the outdoor kitchen area makes it easy to cook, entertain, and spend longer evenings outside.

We also roughed in gas for a future pizza oven so the space can evolve with the homeowners over time. Large-format Dekton Albarium and warm wood accents keep the material palette simple, clean, and comfortable.

The result is a backyard that gives the homeowners everything they wanted without feeling crowded or overdesigned.

Challenges

The biggest challenge was creating a backyard that felt complete without overwhelming the available space. The homeowners wanted room to gather, cook, and spend more time outside, but every square foot needed to work efficiently. By focusing on a few highly functional experiences, integrated seating, and a clean material palette, we created a backyard that feels larger than it actually is while maintaining the flexibility to evolve over time.
