behind the design

A Resort-Style Backyard for a Modern Farmhouse in Texas

The second you come through the gate, the property feels completely removed from the outside world. The long tree-lined drive, layered landscaping, and fountain at the front entry create a quiet arrival experience that immediately slows everything down.

The backyard was designed to feel like a private resort tucked into the Texas landscape. A covered loggia with an outdoor kitchen and bar opens directly to the pool, while floating daybeds, palms rising from the water, and layered lounge spaces make the entire yard feel immersive and relaxed.

Just off the game room, a sunken lounge with a fireplace and media wall becomes the main gathering space at night. Toward the back of the property, the atmosphere shifts again with a mature oak tree, putting green, wood deck, and open lawn that blend naturally into the surrounding trees.

Even with the scale of the property, the entire yard still feels connected. Every space was designed to flow naturally into the next while giving the family different ways to use the property throughout the day.

Challenges

The lot itself was open, flat, and ideal for design, so the challenge wasn’t working around constraints. It was making sure the space didn’t feel overbuilt. With a strong list of features, the design had to stay intentional, keeping the yard open enough for everyday family use while still delivering a complete entertainment experience.

It was also important to create a focal point that worked from inside the home as much as it did out in the yard. Positioning the fire feature along the rear of the pool gave the space a strong visual anchor without adding unnecessary elements, allowing the entire design to feel cohesive from every angle.
