What does your dream yard look like?
Maybe it’s a calming space with a massive spa, neutral tones, and designed to help you unwind.
Maybe it’s focused on fun and entertainment with big seating areas, space to splash around in the pool, and host all the people you love.
Maybe it’s something you want to create for your kids, so your family can make all their core memories at home in your yard.
Whatever your dream yard looks like, you deserve a yard you love. Instead of one you “like.” And we want to help you get that.
One way to take a yard from “just okay” to seriously unforgettable is by adding “WOW” factor to your yard.
This can mean so many different things to different people! But, you’ll know it when you see it. And some of the ways we like to add “WOW” factor to our clients’ yards, is by adding luxury design features to their space. Here are three of the design elements our clients almost always ask for in their new yards.

A Sunken Seating Area

One request we hear from clients—more than almost any other —is “Can you add a sunken seating area?”
A sunken seating area instantly makes any yard feel more luxurious. You get to sit in this cozy space, and you’re at eye level with the rest of the yard, so it just feels high-end.
If you want to add a sunken seating area to your yard, here’s what to keep in mind:

Add Water
For maximum impact, place your sunken seating area near water. When you’re at eye level with the pool water, it’s just an atmosphere that can’t be recreated in any other way.
And, it allows you to feel like you have your own private space in the yard, but still be connected with anyone else who is using the pool.

Focus On The Details
Details and finishing make all the difference. And can be the thing that takes your yard to the next level. When you’re adding a sunken seating area to your yard, details matter, too.
Make sure you work with an expert installer to ensure your sunken seating area drains and functions the way it should.
But, more specifically, choose calming materials that make sense for your space. And pay attention to things like the size of your fire feature relative to the overall seating area.
How far your seating bench is from the other features – because you want to be comfortable and have a sunken seating area that you are comfortable in. For many people, that means resting your feet along the fire feature table. And is the perfect distance away to keep you cozy on those crisp evenings, but not too warm when it’s summer.
All these little things work together to make your sunken seating area truly magical.
A Rain Curtain

Water features add “WOW” factor to any yard. But, a rain curtain is like having a waterfall in your yard, and is one thing client’s request all the time. There are so many different options for water features, but a rain curtain always elevates an outdoor space.

An Element Of Discoverability
Adding a rain curtain to your space also gives your yard the element of discoverability.
You can use it to act as a barrier between the pool and other areas of your yard. But, you can still feel connected to every zone in your space and connect with the people using your yard.
We like to use a rain curtain on the edge of a covered patio, or at the entrance of a California Room. It’s a combination that makes your yard feel more exciting and add that elusive “WOW” factor.

Wellness Features

“Wellness” has kind of been a buzzword in the design world. And it can mean a lot of different things to a lot of people. But, when it comes to your yard, incorporating wellness design elements often means adding a cold plunge, sauna, oversized spa, outdoor gym, lap pool, and things like this.
And we love when our clients request these features!
A few things to keep in mind that will help you make the most of any wellness elements you add to your yard are:

Consider Proximity
If you add a cold plunge and or a spa to your yard, make sure they’re accessible. There’s nothing worse than sprinting all the way across your yard to get back inside to warmth – if you place them too far away from an entrance to your home. Think about the location of your wellness elements if you’re adding them to your yard.

Take Advantage Of The View
If you’re adding a sauna to your yard, make sure you place it somewhere with a view.
There’s nothing more relaxing than sitting in the sauna and looking out over your property. We see people who add a sauna to their yard as an afterthought, and it’s tucked away in the side yard, or way at the back of their property.
But this is one design feature you want to prioritize the placement for – so you can soak in your view while you sweat it out.
