PS: Keep reading all the way to the end for a bonus idea to help you elevate your small yard.

SMALL YARD DESIGN TIP #1

Add Glass Or Acrylic

Adding a glass or acrylic accent to your yard is a great way to add interest to a small lot. And it can give the illusion that there’s more space than there actually is.

This is an acrylic globe water feature, and it’s really unique because it’s actually hollow. While simple in design, the fact that it’s acrylic with the water movement makes it a really impressive feature to add to a yard. And it doesn’t carry much visual weight, so it’s perfect in a smaller space.

Another glass or acrylic feature that will elevate any small yard is a pool or spa panel. This is one thing our clients ask for all the time, and if it’s within your budget to add an acrylic-sided panel to your pool adds “WOW” factor every time.

In a small yard it can really help open up the space and make things feel larger—especially if the glass panel is placed right in front of the entrance to your yard.

You look out at the yard, and see through the pool, all the way to the other side of your yard. It gives the illusion that you have this grand, high-end yard, even if it’s not a very big footprint.

SMALL YARD DESIGN TIP #2

Add A Feature Wall

Adding an artistic focal wall is a great way to take advantage of the space you do have in a small yard. Because you’re working the design up and taking up vertical space, you can incorporate a big, impactful statement wall without taking up much physical footprint in your yard.

This wall is a great example. The elaborate design has LED lights behind it and water flowing down it for a dramatic effect that can dress up a space so well. You could also opt for something with a textured material to add interest and depth to your focal wall. Or, go for a bold stone slab to add elegance to your yard. There are endless options, but taking advantage of the vertical space in your yard with a feature wall is a great way to make the most of your small exterior space.

SMALL YARD DESIGN TIP #3

Add Elevation Changes

When you have limited space to work with, layering design elements is a great way to create space. Instead of having everything on one level plane, you get a dynamic, layered look that actually expands your visual space.

Add a raised patio, a sunken seating area, some layered planters, floating steps, and you go from having a plain, standard space. To one that is so much more interesting. Plus, you get the visual interest of multiple levels to make your yard actually feel larger.

This is a great example. It’s a standard tract home lot with a narrow yard. But we added a sunken seating area in the pool, floating walkways, a sunken seating area, layered statement wall, and more. The overall effect transformed this yard into a resort.

SMALL YARD DESIGN BONUS TIP

Work With A Professional Design Team

The best thing you can do for your small yard is work with a professional design team like the experts at Foxterra Design. Working with a seasoned exterior designer will ensure you get the most out of your yard, which is especially important when you’re limited on space.

A design team like Foxterra’s can help elevate your yard – no matter how small it is. And create the resort-style space you have always wanted. A less experienced designer or a DIY’er likely won’t consider essential elements like scale, material selection, and lighting – all of which are key to a small yard design that’s luxurious.
