Foxterra Featured in Architectural Digest’s “38 Outdoor Fire Pit Ideas to Transform Your Backyard”

Key Takeaways:

Design around the gathering. The most successful fire pits are sized and positioned around how people actually use the space.
Think beyond the flame. Seating, circulation, lighting, and views are just as important as the fire feature itself.
Fire and water work together. Combining both elements creates a resort-inspired outdoor environment.
Make it visible. A fire feature often works best when it can be enjoyed from multiple areas of the backyard.

Why are fire pits still one of the most requested features in luxury backyard design?

Fire pits bring people together in a way few outdoor features can. They extend how long a backyard can be enjoyed throughout the year, create a natural gathering space, and add atmosphere after sunset. In Architectural Digest’s roundup of outdoor fire pit ideas, Foxterra Designer Nate Fox highlighted how thoughtful fire pit design goes beyond the flame itself. The most successful fire features consider seating, sightlines, comfort, and how the feature connects to the rest of the outdoor living experience.

38 Outdoor Fire Pit Ideas To Transform Your Backyard in Time for Spring

Architectural Digest gathered some of the industry’s most compelling outdoor fire pit designs, highlighting projects that range from simple gathering spaces to large-scale outdoor living environments. Read the full article on Architectural Digest to explore all 38 featured designs.

About the Feature

Fire pits have evolved far beyond a simple backyard amenity. Today they often serve as the focal point of an outdoor living space, helping define how homeowners entertain, relax, and use their yards after sunset.

Architectural Digest’s feature explores a wide range of approaches to fire pit design, from built-in architectural installations to sculptural fire bowls and poolside gathering areas. The common theme throughout the article is the role fire plays in bringing people together.

Foxterra’s featured projects reflect this philosophy. Rather than treating the fire feature as a standalone element, each project incorporates fire as part of a larger outdoor living experience.

What Was Covered

One of the featured Foxterra projects centers around a large custom fire pit designed for entertaining.

The design creates multiple opportunities for gathering while allowing guests to enjoy the feature from different seating positions. The goal was not simply to add a fire pit, but to create a destination within the backyard.

Architectural Digest also highlighted a second Foxterra project inspired by the atmosphere and energy of luxury resort environments.

The project combines a large-scale linear fire feature with a poolside lounge area, creating a dramatic focal point visible throughout the property.

"This fire pit seats 15 people comfortably and has a double fire feature to ensure the flame can be enjoyed from multiple angles."

Foxterra’s Perspective

One of the projects Architectural Digest featured includes seating for fifteen people around a double fire feature. The other places a large linear fire pit inside a sunken lounge surrounded by water.

They’re completely different projects, but they were designed around the same idea. The fire wasn’t meant to be something you look at from across the yard. It was meant to be part of where people spend their time.

In larger backyards, a fire feature can help pull people away from the pool, the outdoor kitchen, or the dining area and give them another place to gather. That’s why we often spend more time thinking about the seating and surrounding experience than the fire feature itself.

The Tulum-inspired project featured by Architectural Digest is a good example. The fire pit sits inside the pool lounge, which means you’re surrounded by water while sitting around the fire. It’s one of the more unique gathering spaces we’ve designed, and it completely changes how the backyard feels at night.

When a fire feature is designed around how people actually use the yard, it naturally becomes one of the most used spaces on the property.

"This backyard was inspired by the raw, organic energy of Tulum, and the sunken seating area in the pool includes one of the longest, largest fire pits we've ever designed."
