Key Takeaways:
A luxury yard isn’t about how much you spend. It’s about where you invest. In this project, five decisions made the difference between a standard backyard and a space that feels like a private resort:
– Materials with intention. Save on the large areas with simple, timeless surfaces and reserve your budget for elevated finishes in focal zones.
– A clear focal point. Whether it’s a swing, a fire feature, or a sculptural element, the first thing you see should set the tone for the entire yard.
– Privacy that feels natural. Fencing, layered greenery, and thoughtful placement create the sense of retreat every outdoor space deserves.
– Destinations that draw you out. Covered patios, pergolas, or cabanas turn the yard into a place you want to explore and use daily.
– Furniture that finishes the story. More than décor, it’s what makes a yard livable. Without it, even the best design feels incomplete.
You don’t need an unlimited budget to get a luxury yard.
At Foxterra Design, we design yards that feel like private resorts for families all over the world.
And one of the questions we hear often is: “How do I get a high-end look without overspending?”
The truth is, you just need to know where to focus your budget.
The difference comes down to guidance. When you work with an experienced designer, you’re not left guessing where your money will have the most impact. We help you decide which details deserve the highest investment and which finishes make the whole space feel elevated.
Here are five ways we help clients make the most of their budget while still creating a yard that looks and feels unmistakably luxurious.
1. Be Strategic With Materials

Luxury design doesn’t mean you have to use expensive finishes everywhere. It’s about using luxury materials where they’ll make the biggest impression.
This project is a great example of that.
The main slab in the space is simple concrete. At first glance, you might think concrete has no place next to a luxury home with beautiful wood floors, but it works. A clean, large slab of concrete creates seamless flow and saves thousands compared to covering the entire yard in high-end stone.
But don’t go inexpensive everywhere.
Pick a few areas, like a lounge, poolside, or the entry point of the yard, where you use elevated materials. In this yard, we chose porcelain slabs for the lounge area and porcelain wood tile for the backing. This balance creates a refined look without blowing the budget.
Materials Used In This Yard:
2. Create a Focal Point

Every luxury yard needs a “wow” moment—the thing you notice first when you step outside.
In this backyard, it’s the swing. Elevated above the lower space, it instantly grabs your attention and invites you in.
But, you don’t have to choose a swing as your focal feature. Whether it’s a fire feature, a sculpture, or a pergola, your focal point should break up the space and guide the eye.
Exterior Expert Tip: To help you figure out what focal feature makes sense for you and your space, try this. Stand at your main indoor vantage point (like the living room doors, or your kitchen window) and ask yourself, “What’s the first thing I want to see?”
3. Think About Privacy

No matter how big your budget is, or how extravagant your design is, you need to think about privacy.
A high-end yard doesn’t feel luxurious if you’re staring into your neighbor’s kitchen. Privacy is what creates that “resort” feeling at home.
This yard uses an 8-foot vinyl fence to screen neighboring homes without the cost of building a masonry wall. Tall plantings and layered greenery help too. And if you can’t install mature trees right away, choose species that grow tall over time.
Privacy makes every square foot of your yard feel more usable, and it’s one of the most overlooked elements of exterior design.
4. Design A Destination

A yard that doesn’t have a designated destination feels unfinished. You want spaces that pull you out of the house and encourage you to use them.
In this project, the covered patio acts as a destination. It’s shaded, lounge-ready, and set up for a TV and barbecue area. That makes it a natural gathering point for everything from watching a game to hosting a dinner party.
When you’re planning your own backyard, think about adding destinations like:
– A pergola with dining space
– A poolside cabana
– A fire pit seating area
– An outdoor kitchen
The point is to create intentional zones that extend how you use your yard.
5. Don’t Forget Furniture

This is the tip most people overlook, and one that makes the biggest difference.
Furniture is what transforms a yard from a finished project into a true outdoor living space.
Whether it’s swings, daybeds, or sectional seating, the right furniture and accessories elevate your yard more than almost anything else.
Plan to allocate 5–10% of your construction budget for furniture. High-quality outdoor furniture typically ranges from $10,000–$20,000, but it makes your yard feel like a true resort.
Without it, you’ll end up with a beautiful space you don’t actually use.
Just like you wouldn’t furnish your living room with folding chairs, you shouldn’t finish a backyard without investing in the right seating and lounging areas.
