What “Modern” Really Means in Outdoor Design

Key Takeaways:

Modern outdoor design works when it’s grounded in intention and not just a label.

— Start with a foundation. Modern design gives you a clean, flexible base to build from.
— Let the setting guide decisions. The home and surroundings should shape the direction of the design.
— Mix styles carefully. Not everything pairs naturally, so transitions and materials matter.
— Focus on cohesion. The space should feel like one complete experience, not separate ideas.

When someone says they want a “modern” style for their yard, it usually means something different to everyone.

For some people, modern means clean lines, minimal forms, and a neutral palette. For others, it feels more sculptural, more expressive, and more colorful.

And that is why modern outdoor design isn’t just one thing.

It is a foundation that can take on a lot of different styles depending on the home, the setting, and the feeling the client wants to create in their yard.

In this post, we break down what modern really means in outdoor design, how it can shift depending on the direction you take, and how to combine different styles in a way that still feels like one cohesive space.

Modern Outdoor Design

How Foxterra Defines Modern Outdoor Design

Modern outdoor design isn’t about making a space feel sleek or cold. You can have a very modern design that still feels cozy and warm at the same time, and most of that comes down to the materials you choose and how the space is put together.

A big part of that is how the yard relates back to the home. The house and the landscape should feel like they were designed together, because visually, they always will be together. When those two things don’t align, the space starts to feel disjointed, even if each individual element looks good on its own.

On their own, a lot of modern materials can start to feel a little harsh. When everything is very clean and precise, it can lean a little too rigid if there’s nothing to balance it out. And when this is the case, plantings can make a big difference.

Even small amounts of greenery can soften those edges and change how the space feels when you’re in it, adding warmth to an otherwise modern yard and balancing a modern landscape design approach.

The same thing happens when you bring in water or lighting into an outdoor space. It adds movement and warmth that keeps the space from feeling flat.

Another thing that matters just as much are the surroundings. If you already have a strong natural backdrop, the design shouldn’t try to compete with it. In a lot of cases, pulling things back actually makes the space more impactful. You’re allowing the landscape to do part of the work, and the design is there to support it, not overtake it.

That’s how we look at modern design. It’s not about stripping things down just for the sake of it. It’s about being intentional with what you include, editing out what you don’t need, and creating a space that feels cohesive, immersive, and connected to both the home and the setting around it.

Modern Outdoor Design

Combining Modern Outdoor Design With Other Styles

One of the biggest challenges we see with clients is figuring out how to describe what style they want for their outdoor space. With interiors and architecture, there are a lot of established styles where specific words call to mind very distinct styles. Exterior design is a bit less defined, and that’s why a lot of people naturally reference places instead.

They might say they want a yard that looks and feels like a destination, a resort they stayed at, or a place they’ve always been drawn to. And from there, we figure out how that actually translates into the space.

Most of the time, the goal is not to recreate that place exactly. It’s to understand what stood out about it. Whether that’s the palette, the materials, or just the overall feeling. And then finding the right way to bring that into the design.

And how to mix together two distinct influences.

Some elements naturally work together. Certain materials, textures, or shapes overlap, and that allows everything to come together without feeling forced. But some design details don’t naturally pair well, and we have to think about how they can both exist in a space without it feeling disjointed.

A “modern” style tends to pair well with a lot of different directions because the elements are simpler and more streamlined. It gives you a clean starting point to build on and mix with many different location-inspired styles.

These are some of the most common modern combinations we’ve designed for clients.

Organic Modern Outdoor Design

Tulum / Bali Influence

Clients don’t really come to us and request an “organic modern” yard. Instead, they reference Tulum or a resort they visited somewhere like Bali. What they’re responding to is how those spaces feel. More relaxed, but still modern.

When a client wants Tulum or Bali in their backyard, we don’t change how the space functions. We change how it feels. Instead of everything being sharp and perfectly straight, or symmetrical, we start introducing more texture, more variation, and forms that feel more natural.

We add details like plaster, warm tones, and more organic shapes. It keeps the design modern, but blends in the “organic” style of Tulum or Bali.

Coastal Modern Outdoor Design

Mediterranean / California / Santorini

When a client asks for a coastal style, it usually starts with color.

If they reference Santorini or the Mediterranean, they’re picturing white, soft blues, tones that reflect the sky and water. That sets the tone right away.

From there, we’re not trying to build complexity into the space. We’re actually pulling things back. Letting the architecture, the openness, and the color palette carry more of the design.

That usually means fewer elements, but each one has to feel really impactful. Proportion, placement, material choice all matter because there aren’t as many features in the space.

When it’s done right, it feels simple, but still immersive.

Desert Modern Outdoor Design

Las Vegas / Scottsdale / Utah

Desert modern really comes from the environment.

The goal is to make the space feel like it belongs there. The home, the landscape, everything should feel connected instead of designing a yard that feels out of place against the desert.

We keep the forms minimal and focus on a few strong elements to carry the design. A sculptural piece, a water feature, or a focal point placed at the end of a sightline.

We’re also paying attention to how the built space meets the land. Letting materials blend, softening edges where it makes sense, and making sure nothing feels forced into the environment.

It ends up feeling grounded and intentional without trying to do too much.

Tropical Modern Outdoor Design

Bali / Costa Rica / South Florida

When clients reference places like Bali or Costa Rica, what they’re really drawn to is how immersed you feel in the space. And that’s the cornerstone of Tropical Modern design. Everything is layered in a way where the yard starts to surround you instead of feeling like this wide open space.

We keep the layout clear and organized, but we start layering in more depth. Planting gets denser, transitions between spaces matter more, and each area starts to connect in a way that pulls you through the yard instead of laying everything out all at once.

That’s what creates that feeling where you step into the space and you’re completely transported. You’re not looking out at the yard, you’re inside of it.

Modern Hacienda Outdoor Design

Spanish / Mediterranean Influence

With a Spanish or Mediterranean-style home, the architecture gives you a lot to work with. There’s already warmth in the materials, more defined spaces, and a certain character to how everything is laid out.

The goal is to make the outdoor space feel like it belongs there. Not something separate, but something that feels connected back to the house.

We add more modern elements into the space by keeping those materials and that warmth, but simplifying the lines and cleaning up the overall composition so it feels more intentional.

A lot of that comes from paying attention to what’s already there. Stone, colors, textures. And then carrying those things into the landscape so the transition from house to yard feels natural.

Modern French Outdoor Design

European-Inspired Modern Landscapes

French design already has a strong point of view. There’s structure, there’s detail, and there’s a certain ornateness in how everything is put together.

When we bring modern into that, we’re not trying to change it. We’re adding contrast and simplifying things where they might otherwise start feeling heavy.

At the same time, we keep the elements that give a French style space character. The materials, the layering, the repetition. This creates a balanced space that doesn’t lean too traditional or too modern.

Modern Outdoor Design

Designing a Modern Outdoor Space

Modern outdoor design isn’t one fixed style.

It can take on different directions depending on the home, the setting, and the feeling you want the space to have. Sometimes that leans more organic, sometimes more coastal, sometimes more structured or more layered.

What matters is how those decisions come together. The layout, the materials, and the overall direction should all feel connected, so the space reads as one cohesive design.

If you’re starting to think about your own space, the goal isn’t to pick a label. It’s to work with a design team that can figure out what you’re drawn to and how that translates into a modern backyard design built for your lifestyle.
