Can you add a sports court to a luxury backyard?
Yes. A pickleball court, basketball court, soccer field, or multi-purpose sports court can absolutely be incorporated into a luxury backyard. The key is considering the court as part of the overall outdoor design, including its location, colors, surrounding landscaping, views, and how your family plans to use the space.
We’ve designed courts on rooftops, tucked them into sloped properties, matched court colors to surrounding features, and incorporated full-size sports areas into resort-style yards. There isn’t one way to do it. You have to look at the property and figure out what makes sense for that particular yard and family.
Key Takeaways:
Sports courts have become one of the most requested features we design. And as these yards show, there are so many different ways to make one part of a beautiful outdoor space.
— There are options beyond pickleball. We’re designing basketball courts, soccer fields, and multi-purpose courts for families who want more ways to use their yards.
— Every property is different. We’ve put courts on rooftops, tucked them into sloped properties, and designed them right alongside pools.
— The details make a difference. Court colors, landscaping, signage, and the areas around the court can all tie back to the rest of the yard.
— Make it something your family will use. Whether that’s pickleball, basketball, soccer, or a little bit of everything, it gives everyone another reason to get outside.
Would you put a pickleball court in your yard?
We’re getting more and more requests not just for pickleball courts, but for all kinds of sports courts.
And we understand why.
Adding a dedicated space for the hobbies you love gives you another reason to spend time outside—whether you’re playing with family, having friends over, or just getting in a quick game whenever you want.
Here’s a look at some of the sports courts and recreation areas we’ve designed for clients recently, so you can use this inspiration for your own luxury yard renovation.

A Palm Springs-Inspired Pickleball Court
Foxterra founder Justin Fox’s own pickleball court is proof that incorporating recreation into your outdoor space does not mean compromising luxury resort style. He took inspiration from the iconic resort, The Parker, to create a Palm Springs aesthetic pickleball court and lemonade stand in his own backyard.
It’s become the perfect place for family and friends to gather – whether they’re playing pickleball, basketball, or just hanging out at the “cafe.”
There’s an elevated walkway through to the “The Courts” complete with a sign and a layout that saves the full reveal until you’ve walked past the entrance archway.
That, plus, the yellow and white stripes give the whole area that Palm Springs feel, while the two-tone green court works really well with all the landscaping around it. The café, the signage, and all those little details, make the entire space feel like you have your own private pickleball club right in your backyard.
A Rooftop Pickleball Court on the Water
This luxury Florida yard is on a corner lot right along the waterway. With the shape of the property and all the other features this family wanted to include outside, there wasn’t enough room in the main outdoor living area for a sports court.
So, we put the pickleball court on the roof.
It gave the family a completely separate place to hang out and play without taking away space from everything happening below. And because of where the home is located, you can be up there playing pickleball while boats are going by on the water right next to you.
It’s one of the most unique sports areas we’ve ever designed for a client. You get the fun of having a pickleball court at home, but the rooftop location and views make the whole experience pretty hard to replicate anywhere else.
A Soccer Field That Doubles as a Huge Lawn
This is one of the most immersive organic modern yards we’ve designed. We used water throughout the property and added boulder walkways that almost look like they’re floating. We brought in oversized stonework, a massive zero-edge pool, floating daybeds, sunken seating, fire features, and a huge entertaining area with swings at the bar. There’s a lot to experience as you move through the yard.
But one of the most unique areas is the soccer field we added at the back of the property.
It’s a full-size soccer field, and it creates an interesting contrast to everything else happening throughout the yard. When the kids want to play soccer, they have enough space to actually play a full game. And when no one is playing, it’s this big expanse of green that almost feels like a private park. The family can use it for parties, games, or larger gatherings, or just enjoy having all that open space as part of the property.
It’s a great example of how you can add something as large as a soccer field without having it feel out of place. When it’s not being used for soccer, you still have this beautiful open area that adds to the experience of the entire yard.
A Multi-Use Court With a Mountain View
This Utah yard is built on a pretty big slope with gorgeous mountain views. That meant we had to think about how we could fit everything this family wanted while still giving them that resort-style yard.
We ended up using the slope to our advantage. There are lots of different layers throughout the main part of the yard, with the pool, sunken seating, lounging, and entertaining areas all down below. Then up at the very top, we tucked away a multi-purpose sports court.
There’s a net for pickleball that can easily be moved out of the way, plus a basketball hoop, so the family can use the court for different sports. And because it’s tucked up above everything else, you don’t really see it while you’re hanging out around the pool or using the rest of the yard.
It’s a really cool way to fit a full sports court into a sloped property. You get this whole other area to play up top, while everything below still feels like the luxury resort-style yard the family wanted.
A Multi-Use Court With a Mountain View
This French Modern yard has some really classic design elements that might seem like they’d be at odds with a massive basketball court. Especially because it’s not a very big property.
But even with a pool and spa, we were able to fit in a custom basketball court along with plenty of space for lounging and outdoor living.
And, we chose a court color that’s really similar to the pool, so when you look across the yard, the two feel connected. It’s a great example of how something as big as a basketball court can still work with the style of the rest of the yard.
How Do You Make a Sports Court Work in a Luxury Yard?
One thing you can see from all of these yards is that we don’t approach every sports court the same way.
Sometimes it makes sense to put the court somewhere unexpected, like on a rooftop. On another property, we might tuck it into an area you can’t see from the pool. And sometimes the court is right there with everything else, so we can have more fun with the colors and make it part of the overall look.
You also have to think about what happens when no one is playing. A soccer field can become a huge lawn for parties and family gatherings. A multi-purpose court can go from pickleball to basketball. Even the areas around the court can give people another place to hang out.
It really comes down to what you want to do outside, how much space you have, and how the sports area fits with everything else you want in your yard.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you add a sports court to a luxury backyard?
Yes. Sports courts can be incorporated into luxury backyard designs alongside pools, spas, outdoor living areas, landscaping, and other features. Placement, court colors, surrounding landscaping, and the way the court relates to the rest of the property can all help it feel like part of the overall outdoor space.
What types of sports courts can you put in a backyard?
Depending on the available space, a backyard can include a pickleball court, basketball court, soccer field, multi-purpose court, or other dedicated recreation areas. Multi-purpose courts are especially useful for families who want to play more than one sport in the same space.
Can a pickleball court look good in a luxury backyard?
Absolutely. A pickleball court doesn’t have to feel separate from the rest of a luxury yard. Court colors, landscaping, fencing, surrounding architecture, and where you place the court can all be considered as part of the overall design.
Can you combine a pickleball court and basketball court?
Yes. A multi-purpose backyard court can accommodate both pickleball and basketball. For example, a removable pickleball net allows the same court to be opened up for basketball or other activities.
Where can you put a sports court if you don’t have enough backyard space?
It depends on the property. Foxterra has designed a pickleball court on a rooftop and placed a multi-purpose court at the top of a steep property to make use of space away from the main outdoor living areas. The best location depends on the size, shape, grade, and layout of the property.
How do you make a backyard sports court feel more luxurious?
Consider the sports court alongside the rest of the yard from the beginning. Custom court colors, landscaping, fencing, lighting, surrounding materials, seating, and even details like signage can help make the recreation area feel intentional and personal.
