Great exterior design is more than making a beautiful outdoor space.
It’s about creating an immersive yard that’s experiential and has an element of discoverability.
That’s designed for you and your lifestyle.
For this yard, our clients wanted something that would WOW them.
To feel like they’re connected to the outdoors – when they’re inside.
And the finished space is that and so much more.
When you’re sitting in their living area, you have this almost magical view of their yard.
You can look through from inside the house into the yard, through the glass-paneled pool, through to a fire feature.
It creates an optical illusion that’s so mesmerizing – we’ve never seen a yard quite like this one before.

The Magical Optical Illusion That Started It All

This yard started with the idea to put fire in water.
Our clients have these massive windows and we thought, wouldn’t it be incredible to use that as the focal point of the yard, and create a space that has an unbelievable view – from indoors?
These windows are so dominant in this space and the kitchen and the living room are all congregated around this area. So, it made sense to use this as the main focal point for the yard.
We designed the pool with an acrylic panel in the front and back of the pool – to make the illusion possible. Having those two panels, gave us the ability to highlight the fire feature in the back of the pool.
And you can see the entire thing while sitting in the spa, as well. There’s an area where everybody can congregate and be eye level with the acrylic panels and the entire optical illusion.
Design Details Elevate The Yard Even More

Aside from the exciting, focal features in this yard, it’s the small details that take it to the next level. We added artistic accents to elevate the yard.
Like in the turf. We created this geometric pattern on both sides of the space, that just adds a little something extra to what would otherwise just be a large space filled with turf.
We also used an intricate tile pattern to help emphasize the optical illusion in the pool. We used different tiles in this pattern to really draw the eye through the pool to the fire feature. And, it looks subtle if you’re in the pool, but the overhead photos really give you a good look at just how much impact those material choices make in the space.
Illuminating This Exterior With Custom Lighting

Another stand-out element in this yard is lighting.
We talk about how important lighting in an exterior space all the time. But this yard is a great example of lighting that can set the tone for the entire yard. Not only did we include more standard lights to highlight certain areas of the yard and make it functional after dark. But we also really used lighting to add a playful edge to the space.
There’s an LED light strip in this fun, sweeping design surrounding the fire feature. There are some massive, sculptural lights throughout the yard.
But the really impressive lights are underneath these acrylic tiles in the ground. The effect is almost like an illuminated checkerboard and it’s really unique.
In this yard, the lights add color and vibrance to the space, and really make the entire yard feel artistic and creative.
