#1 Categorize Your Materials
When you’re compiling your list of possible materials, the first thing you should always do is categorize your materials in one of two ways. Each one should either be a focus material or a non-focus material.
What does that mean?
Focal materials are certain materials that draw the eye and have stronger textures or brighter colors.
It’s really important to make sure that you don’t have too many focal materials because the yard can start to feel busy and chaotic because your eye doesn’t know where to look.
Choose 2-3 focal materials. And keep the rest non-focal materials.
Think of these like complimentary materials that are more neutral.
#2 Make Sure Materials Are In Harmony
Another way to make sure you’re choosing the right materials for your yard – is to make sure that all of the materials are in harmony.
How do you do this?
Take a look at all your materials together.
Whether that’s with a mood board. Or just laying out your samples all side-by-side.
And, it’s essential to take your samples and look at them under direct sunlight. They can look drastically different if you’re inside, in a showroom, or soemther else that has different lighting than what you’ll see outside.
This is the only way that you can ensure you don’t make material choices that you will regret.

#3 Save Furniture For Last
Some people don’t consider furniture as a material, but it’s an important part of the overall look and feel of your space.
And what we see happen too often, is decision fatigue. You spend so much time selecting materials, that you just end up making rushed decisions about furniture.
Instead, think about materials and furniture in two separate stages. Choose all your materials first. And then you’ll be able to select furniture that goes with all your choices—when you’re ready to start making decisions again.
#4 Choose Timeless Materials
Make timeless selections.
It can be tough to make decisions and know that they’re not “trending” styles.
A perfect example of this is “Millennial Gray.”
There are spaces with every shad of gray under the sun and they’re starting to look dated.
One way to avoid choosing materials that you’ll want to swap out in 5 years or 10 years is to ask yourself this question:
“Will I still love this in the future?”
You’re investing in your home and you want to choose materials that will stand the test of time.
Keep these tips in mind for your yard. Materials can make or break an outdoor space and we’re here to help you choose the perfect options for your project. When you’re ready to transform your yard, click the button below to get started.
